“바다에 빠진 자동차 보는 순간 몸이 저절로 움직였어요.”
- 바다 추락 차량 창문 깨고 운전자 구한 부경대생 ‘화제’

바다에 빠진 차량을 발견하고 망설임 없이 바다로 뛰어들어 운전자를 구한 대학생이 화제가 되고 있다.

부산 국립부경대학교 기계설계공학과 4학년 정한호 씨(24)가 그 주인공.

정 씨는 지난 3월 27일 오후 6시경 창원 마산합포구 진동면 방파제에서 길을 착각해 바다에 빠진 차량을 발견하고 즉시 바다에 뛰어들어 차량 유리를 깨고 운전자를 구해냈다.

정 씨는 “주말에 고향을 찾아 횟집을 운영하는 부모님을 도와드리고 있었는데, 가게 바로 앞 바다에서 ‘쿵’하는 소리가 나서 밖을 내다보니 방파제에서 바다로 이어지는 계단으로 승용차 한 대가 빠지고 있었다.”라고 당시 상황을 설명했다.

그는 “사고 장면을 보는 순간 저절로 몸이 움직여 바다로 뛰어들었다. 바닷물이 가슴팍까지 차올랐지만, 차가 떠내려가 버리면 손쓸 수 없을 것 같아 바다에 떠 있는 차량 뒤 견인고리를 두 손으로 잡아 방파제 쪽으로 있는 힘껏 당겨왔다.”라고 회상했다.

당시 전국적으로 많은 비가 오고 날도 어두워지고 있었던 상황. 정 씨는 “차에는 운전자 혼자 있었는데, 문과 창문이 고장 나 못나오고 있었다. 급히 망치를 가져와 창문을 깨 운전자를 꺼냈고, 그 틈에 소형어선을 가져 온 아버지가 운전자를 끌어올려 구조해낼 수 있었다.”라고 말했다.

정 씨의 활약에 창원소방본부가 지난 4월 16일 정 씨에게 ‘골든타임 119’ 상을 수여한 것을 비롯, 5월 6일에는 포스코청암재단이 부경대를 직접 찾아 정 씨에게 표창을 수여했다.

정 씨는 “이런 사고를 보면 누구라도 똑같이 행동했을 텐데, 많은 관심을 주셔서 민망하다.”라면서, “취업을 준비하고 있는 평범한 대학생이지만, 앞으로도 어려운 사람을 보면 행동에 나설 수 있는 사람이 되고 싶다.”라고 웃었다. <부경투데이>

Witnessing the car sunken into the sea, a university student who jumped into the sea without hesitation to save a driver is a hot topic.

Jeong Han-Ho (age 24), a 4th grader in the Department of Mechanical Design Engineering at Pukyong National University, Busan, is the courageous hero of this accident.

On March 27, around 6 pm, Mr. Jeong found a vehicle hit the sea by mistaken it for a road at a sea wall in Jindong-myeon, Happo-gu, Masan, Changwon, as soon as he found the car, he immediately jumped into the sea without hesitation, broke the car windows and rescued the driver.

Mr. Jeong explained the situation at that time, "I was helping my parents who run a raw fish store in my hometown on the weekend, but I looked out the window because there was a thump on the sea right in front of the store. At the moment, what I found was, a car falling to the stairway of the seawall to the sea."

He said, "The moment I saw the scene of the accident, my body moved naturally and jumped into the sea. The sea water rose to my chest, but if the car floated away, I felt there was no way to do anything, so I grabbed the tow hook behind the vehicle floating in the sea with both hands and pulled it out towards the sea wall."

At that time, it was raining a lot nationwide and the days were getting dark. "The driver was alone in the car, but the doors and windows were broken and the driver couldn't come out. I promptly brought a hammer, broke the window and pulled the driver out, and my father brought a small fishing boat in the gap, he pulled the driver up to rescue," Mr. Jeong said.

The Changwon Fire Headquarters awarded him the 'Golden Time 119' award on April 16 for Mr. Jeong's courageous behavior and on May 6, the POSCO TJ Park Foundation visited Pukyong National University and awarded him a commendation.

"Anyone would have acted the same when seeing such an accident, but I am a little embarrassed because people pay a lot of attention. I am an ordinary university student preparing for a job, but I want to become a person who can take action when I see a person in difficult situation in the future," he said, smiling. <Pukyong Today>
