한국전쟁 美 참전용사들 은혜 갚으러 간 한국 청년들

- 부경대 평화봉사단 ‘UN서포터즈’ … 미국에서 보훈행사 개최

“청춘 바쳐 한국 평화 지켜준 은혜, 저희가 잊지 않겠습니다.”

한국 청년들이 한국전쟁 당시 UN군으로 참전해 청춘을 바쳐 평화를 지켜낸 참전용사들을 직접 찾아 감사를 전했다.

국립부경대학교(총장 장영수)의 학생평화봉사단 부경UN서포터즈(대표학생 황민혜)는 1월 13일 오후(현지 시각) 미국 메릴랜드주 하워드 카운티 자치주청사에서 한국전쟁 참전용사 보훈행사를 열었다.

부경UN서포터즈는 미주한인회와 세계한인재단이 개최한 한인 이주 120주년 기념행사에 참여해 이번 보훈 행사를 열고, 한국 청년들이 민간 외교사절로서 활약하여 한미 우호 증진에 이바지하겠다는 각오를 밝혔다.

부경UN서포터즈는 국내외에 생존해 있는 한국전쟁 참전용사들과 그 가족을 직접 찾아 감사를 전하는 부경대만의 독특한 봉사단이다. 2009년 1기 이후 15년째 대학 인근에 있는 세계 유일의 UN기념공원을 찾아 헌화 참배하는 것을 비롯, 한국전쟁 전사자 유해 발굴 참여와 727 정전협정 홍보 등 UN 관련 행사를 지원해왔다.

부경UN서포터즈 학생 12명은 이날 행사에 한국전쟁 미국 참전용사를 초청해 미리 준비해간 감사패와 선물을 전달하고, 한복을 입고 공연을 여는 등 행사를 진행했다.

부경UN서포터즈 황민혜 학생은 “우리와 같은 나이에 머나먼 타국에서 평화를 위해 싸운 참전용사들을 직접 뵙고 나니 정말 존경스럽고 감격스럽다. 참전용사와 유가족들의 용기와 희생을 잊지 않고, 앞으로도 보은 봉사활동에 힘쓰겠다.”라고 말했다.

이날 행사에 참여한 참전용사 짐 피셔 씨(95세)는 “청춘을 바쳐 지켜낸 한국에서 청년들이 직접 찾아와 고맙다고 말해주니 가슴이 벅차다.”라고 소감을 밝혔다.

부경UN서포터즈는 이날 보훈행사 이후 지미 고메즈 미국 연방 하원의원을 만나 부경대의 UN서포터즈 활동을 소개하고 미국 의회에서의 지지를 요청했다. 이와 함께 알링턴 국립묘지를 방문해 한국전쟁 참전 무명의 미국 용사들에게 참배하는 등 보훈활동을 펼쳤다.

이들은 이어 1월 16일(현지 시각)에는 뉴욕에 거주하는 살바토레 스칼레이트 씨(93세) 등 참전용사의 자택을 방문해 UN군 참전으로 한국의 자유를 수호한 데 대해 감사함을 직접 표했다. <부경투데이>

Korean youths expressed their gratitude to American veterans who participated in the Korean War

“We will never forget the grace of keeping Korea’s peace by sacrificing your precious youth.”

Korean youths personally visited and expressed their gratitude to the veterans who fought as part of the UN forces during the Korean war and devoted their youth to keep peace.

On the afternoon of January 13 (local time), the Pukyong UN supporters (representative Hwang Min-Hye), a student peace volunteer group from Pukyong National University (President Jang Young-Soo), held a veteran event for Korean war veterans at the Howard County autonomous district office in Maryland, U.S.A.

Pukyong UN supporters participated in the 120th anniversary event (Korean American day) of Korean immigrants held by the Federation of Korean associations, U.S.A., and the World Korean Foundation, held this veteran event, and expressed their determination to contribute to the promotion of friendship between Korea and the United States by serving as citizen diplomatic missions.

Pukyong UN supporters is a unique volunteer group only exists in Pukyong National University that personally visits and expresses gratitude to the last living veterans of the Korean war and their families at home and abroad. Since the first foundation in 2009, it has been supporting UN-related affairs for 15 years, including visiting the world's only UN memorial park near the campus to pay tribute to war veterans, participating in the excavation of Korean War dead remains, and promoting Armistice Day, July 27.

Twelve students from the Pukyong UN supporters invited American veterans who participated in the Korean war to the event, delivered appreciation plaques and gifts prepared in advance, and held a performance wearing hanbok.

Hwang Min-Hye, a member from the UN supporters said, “It was a very respectful and an overwhelming moment for me to meet veterans who fought for peace in a faraway country at the same age as us. We will not forget the courage and sacrifice of the veterans and the war bereaved families, and we will continue to do our best in volunteer activities to show our gratitude to them.”

Mr. Jim Fisher (age 95), a veteran who participated in the event, said, “I feel overwhelmed because students came from Korea where I devoted my youth to keep peace, to see me personally and said thank you for what I have done.”

On the same day after the veterans event, Pukyong UN supporters met Mr. Jimmy Gomez, a member of the U.S. house of representatives, to introduce the UN supporters activities and ask for support from the U.S. congress. Along with this, they visited Arlington national cemetery and paid tribute to the unknown American soldiers who fought for the Korean war.

On January 16 (local time), they visited the homes of veterans including Mr. Salvatore Scarlato (age 93) living in New York and directly expressed their gratitude for defending Korea's freedom through his participation in the UN forces. <Pukyong Today>
