국립부경대, ‘CFA Institute 리서치챌린지’ 한국대회 우승

- 성창욱·김희영·정우진·김세웅·한서준 팀 … 아시아태평양 대회 출전 자격 획득

국립부경대학교(총장 장영수)는 ‘2023/24 CFA Institute 리서치챌린지’ 한국대회 결선에서 국립부경대 Challiance 팀이 우승을 차지했다고 밝혔다. 

주인공은 성창욱(공공인재·금융협동과정 석사1년), 김희영(공공인재·금융협동과정 석사1년), 정우진(경영학부 3학년), 김세웅(경제학부 3학년), 한서준(경영학부 1학년) 학생팀(지도교수 이유경 경영학부 교수·멘토 김연국 CFA).

이들은 CFA한국협회 주최 DB김준기문화재단 후원으로 지난 1월 27일 서울 롯데월드타워 SKY31 컨벤션에서 열린 이번 대회에서 최종 우승해 우승 트로피와 CFA 프로그램 장학금 등을 수상했다.

‘투자분석의 올림픽’으로 불리는 ‘CFA Institute 리서치챌린지’는 전 세계 대학(원)생을 대상으로 열리는 글로벌 투자분석 발표 대회다. 분석 종목에 대한 보고서 평가 점수와 발표 평가 점수를 합산해 수상자를 가리며, 모든 과정은 영어로 진행된다.

지난해 8월부터 시작해 6개월간 진행된 한국대회에는 17개 대학에서 23개 팀 100여 명의 대학(원)생이 참가했고, 결선에는 국립부경대를 비롯해 경희대, 단국대, 서울대, 한양대, 홍익대 등 6개 팀이 올라 최종 우승을 가렸다.

이들은 제시된 산업과 기업을 분석해 투자자들에게 매수(매도) 추천을 제공하는 이번 대회에서 종목 분석을 비롯해 심도 있는 리서치, 모델링, 기업분석 등 탁월한 전문성과 뛰어난 영어 발표 역량을 인정받았다.

이번 한국대회에서 우승한 국립부경대 학생팀은 오는 3월 아시아-태평양(APAC) 지역 대회에 한국 대표로 출전해 26개 팀과 겨루게 된다. 이 대회 상위 2개 팀은 미주(AMERICAS) 지역 및 유럽/중동/아프리카(EMEA) 지역의 각 상위 2개 팀과 최종 우승자를 가린다. 올해 글로벌 결선대회는 5월 중 폴란드 바르샤바에서 열릴 예정이다.

김희영 학생은 “8월부터 진행됐던 예선과 1월 본선 발표를 위한 준비를 위해 매일 10시간 이상 팀플을 진행했다. 이번 기업분석을 통해 학부와 석사 과정을 통해 배웠던 경영과 재무에 대한 전반적인 지식을 활용하는 것은 물론, 실제로 기업의 가치를 분석(valuation)하며 실제 업무에 적용할 수 있는 지식까지 습득할 수 있었다. 또 경영과 금융업에 대한 이해가 높아져 앞으로의 취업 준비에 큰 도움이 될 것으로 생각한다.”라고 수상소감을 밝혔다.

김세웅 학생은 “새로운 도전이라 처음에는 걱정이 많이 됐지만 준비하는 과정에서 많은 것을 배웠고, 상까지 받게 돼 팀원들과 도움 주신 교수님께 감사하게 생각한다. 앞으로 이 경험을 살려 기획, 컨설팅, IR 직무 등에서 일해보고 싶다.”라고 말했다.

정우진, 한서준 학생은 “수상을 위해 밤낮없이 달려온 과정들이 좋은 결실을 보게 돼 다행이라고 생각한다. 이번 대회에서 정말 많이 배웠고, 이 소중한 경험을 바탕으로 경영지원/IR, 금융권 직무에 도전해 보고 싶다.”라고 소회를 밝혔다.

한편 CFA한국협회는 2012년부터 해마다 이 대회를 개최하고 있으며, 역대 우승 대학은 연도순으로 한동대, 서강대(2회), 고려대(2회), 성균관대(2회), 서울대, 홍익대(2회), 단국대 등이다. <부경투데이>

PKNU, winner of the CFA Institute research challenge Korea competition

Pukyong National University (President Jang Young-Soo) announced that the team 'Challiance' from Pukyong National University won the finals of the '2023/24 CFA institute research challenge' of Korean competition.

The winning team (advisory, prof. Lee Yoo-Kyeong in business administration, mentor, Kim Yeon-Kook from CFA) members are Sung Chang-Wook (1-year master's student in interdisciplinary program of public service and finance), Kim Hee-Young (1-year master's student in interdisciplinary program of public service and finance), Jeong Woo-Jin (3-year student in business administration), Kim Se-Woong (1-year student in business administration), and Han Seo-Joon (1-year student in business administration).

They won the competition held at the SKY31 convention in Lotte world tower in Seoul on January 27th with the support of the DB Kim Jun-Ki cultural foundation, hosted by the CFA Korea association, and received a trophy and a CFA program scholarship.

The 'CFA institute research challenge', known as the 'Olympics of investment analysis', is a global investment analysis presentation competition held for university (graduate) students around the world. The winners are determined by adding up the evaluation scores of the reports on the analyzed items and the presentation scores, and this entire process is taken in English.

About 100 college (graduate) students in 23 teams from 17 universities participated in the Korean competition, which started in August last year and lasted for 6 months, and 6 teams including Pukyong National University, Kyunghee university, Dankook university, Seoul national university, Hanyang university, and Hongik university made it to the finals.

In this competition, which analyzes presented industries and companies and provides buy (sell) recommendations to investors, they were recognized for their outstanding expertise in stock analysis, in-depth research, modeling, and corporate analysis, as well as their excellent English presentation skills.

The student team from Pukyong National University, which won this year's Korean competition, will compete as Korea's representative in the asia-pacific (APAC) regional championship in March and compete against 26 teams. The top two teams that win this championship will compete against the top two teams from the Americas (AMERICAS) region and the Europe/Middle East/Africa (EMEA) region to determine the final winner. The global final competition is scheduled to be held in Warsaw, Poland in May this year.

"To prepare for the preliminaries that started in August and the finals in January, we practiced as a team for more than 10 hours every day. Through this corporate analysis, I was able to utilize the general knowledge about management and finance that I had learned through undergraduate and master's courses, as well as acquire knowledge that could be applied to actual work by analyzing (valuing) the value of a company. At the same time, I believe that my increased understanding of management and the financial industry will be of great help in preparing for future employment," Kim Hee-Young gave her impressions on receiving the award.

Kim Se-Woong said, "I was so worried at the first time because it was a new challenge to me, but I learned a lot during the preparation, led me to receive the award, I appreciate my team members and my professor supporting me. In the future, I would like to use this experience to work in planning, consulting, and IR positions."

Jeong Woo-Jin and Han Seo-Joon also shared their impressions, "We think it's great that the process of running day and night to win the award has borne good results. We learned a lot from this competition, and based on this valuable experience, we would like to try out for a job in management support/IR or the financial sector."

The CFA society Korea has been holding this competition every year since 2012, and past winning universities, in order of year, are Handong university, Sogang university (twice), Korea university (twice), Sungkyunkwan university (twice), Seoul national university, Hongik university (twice), and Dankook university. <Pukyong Today>
