“3개 전공 융합해 원하는 학위 받고 취업도 성공했어요”

- 국립부경대 ‘학생설계전공’ 우수 사례 ‘주목’

국립부경대학교(총장 장영수)는 학생이 직접 전공을 설계해 이수하는 ‘학생설계전공’의 첫 졸업 및 취업 사례가 나오면서 제도 확대 운영에 나선다.

국립부경대 자원생물학전공 전지현 동문(20학번)은 최근 국립수산과학원 연구원(연구검사직)에 합격했다.

전지현 동문은 국립부경대가 지난 2022년부터 본격적으로 운영을 시작한 학생설계전공 제도를 활용해 직접 전공을 설계해 처음으로 학위를 받고 취업에도 성공한 사례다.

학생설계전공이란 기존 전공을 선택해 이수하는 일반적인 복수전공과 달리, 학생이 직접 2개 이상의 전공 교육과정을 융합해 설계하는 방식이라 기존에 없던 새로운 전공이 만들어진다. 올해 1학기 현재 모두 39개의 학생설계전공이 개설돼 운영 중이다.

지난 2월 졸업한 전지현 동문은 자원생물학전공 학위와 함께, 해양·수산·환경 등 3개 분야의 전공 교육과정을 융합해 직접 설계한 ‘해양수산융합과학전공’으로 복수전공 학위를 받았다.

그는 “해양 분야 연구원이 꿈이어서 해양학전공에 입학했었는데, 수산 분야의 전문지식이 필요해 자원생물학전공으로 전과했다. 공부를 해보니 환경 분야 전문지식도 필요해 고민이었는데, 학생설계전공이라는 제도를 알게 돼 나에게 딱 맞고 원하는 전공을 직접 만들어 학위를 받을 수 있었다.”라고 밝혔다.

그는 현재 국립수산과학원에 최근 신설된 기후환경연구부에서 근무하며 신입이지만 자기 몫을 톡톡히 하고 있다. 세계적 관심사로 부상한 기후환경 변화에 대응하는 연구를 수행하는데, 해양, 수산, 환경 등 융합 지식이 필요한 곳이라 맞춤형 인재로 인정받은 것.

전지현 동문은 “연구원이 되려면 많은 전문지식이 필요해 대학원까지도 생각했지만, 학생설계전공을 통해 필요한 역량을 모두 쌓으며 꿈을 일찍 이뤘다. 4학년 졸업할 때까지 학점을 꽉 채워 이수해야 해 힘들기도 했지만, 나만이 할 수 있는 분야에서 대체할 수 없는 사람이 된 것 같아 기쁘다.”라고 말했다.

국립부경대는 학생들의 자기주도학습 역량을 키우고 전공 선택권을 보장하기 위해 학생설계전공을 주전공으로도 개설해 이수하는 방안을 검토하는 등 제도를 확대 운영할 계획이다. <부경투데이>

Pukyong National University (President Jang Young-Soo) has decided to expand the 'student-designed major' program after the first case of a student who designed their own major, completed the coursework, and successfully gained employment.

Jeon Ji-Hyeon, an alum (class of 2020) of major in marine biology at Pukyong National University, recently secured a position as a research inspector at the National institute of fisheries science.

She is the first case of a student who utilized Pukyong National University's 'student-designed major' program, which was officially launched in 2022, to create her own major, earn a degree, and successfully secure employment.

The 'student-designed major' differs from the traditional double major approach, in which students select and complete existing majors. Instead, it allows students to create new, unique majors by combining courses from two or more existing disciplines. As of the first semester of this year, a total of 39 student-designed majors are being offered and managed.

Jeon Ji-Hyeon graduated this past February, received a degree in marine biology and earned a double major degree in 'marine fisheries convergence science', a major she personally designed by integrating courses from three fields: marine, fisheries, and environmental studies.

She said, "I initially enrolled in the marine science major because my dream was to become a researcher in the marine field, but I realized I needed specialized knowledge in fisheries, so I transferred to the marine biology major. As I continued my studies, I realized I needed expertise in environmental science as well, then I heard about the 'student-designed major' program, thinking it as the perfect opportunity to create a major tailored to my needs and interests, allowing me to earn a degree in exactly what I wanted."

She is currently working at the newly established division of climate and environmental research at the National institute of fisheries science, despite being a newcomer, she is making significant contributions. She has been recognized as a tailored talent for her expertise in a field that requires integrated knowledge in marine, fisheries, and environmental sciences, and she is conducting research to respond to climate and environmental changes, which have become a global concern.

Jeon Ji-Hyeon said, "I thought about going to graduate school as extensive specialized knowledge is required to become a researcher, but I believe I achieved my dream early by building all the necessary competencies through the student-designed major. It was challenging to complete all the required credits by the time I graduated, but I'm happy to have become an irreplaceable person in a field where only I can excel."

Pukyong National University is planning to expand its programs by introducing a student-designed major as a primary major to enhance students' self-directed learning capabilities and ensure their right to choose their majors. <Pukyong Today>
