이 동영상의 종반부에서 부경대학교 김영섭 총장은 학생들에게 “이거 ‘라떼이즈홀스’ 되면 안 되는데, 이거 잔소리였지?” 하고 걱정했고, 좌중의 부경대생들이 웃었다. 

바로 ‘총장님이 들려주는 부경대 역사스페셜’ 동영상에서였다.

이 영상은 부경대 김영섭 총장과 부경대 재학생들과의 간담회를 찍은 것으로 30분 분량이다. 미래교육혁신본부가 만든 온라인콘텐츠 <대학생활과인권> 1강이다.

비록 ‘나 때는 말이야’를 완전히 비켜갈 순 없었더라도(^^), 이 영상은 코로나19로 ‘집콕’ 중인 부경대 새내기들에게 부경대는 어떤 대학인지, 대학생활을 어떻게 해야 하는지 등을 흥미롭게 전해주고 있다.

유튜브의 부경대 채널에 올라온 이 영상은 300회 이상의 조회를 기록하고 있다.

그 영상 속으로 잠깐 들어가 보자.

<부산기네스125선> "부산 최초의 대학, 부경대"

먼저 이 영상에서 김 총장은 ‘부산기네스125선이라는 책에 부산 최초의 대학이라고 기록되어 있는 부경대의 뿌리를 말씀해 달라’는 한 학생 질문에 “부경대 전신인 부산수산대가 1941년에 생겼는데 설립 때부터 4년제 대학이었다.”고 부경대 역사를 자세히 소개했다.

그는 “그 당시엔 부산 지역에 4년제 대학으로는 부산수산대가 유일했고, 4년제 대학은 전국에도 몇 개 되지 않았다.”면서, “그만큼 뿌리가 깊으니까 부경대는 내공이 있는 대학.”이라고 말했다.

동원그룹 회장 김재철 동문의 성공 비결은?

이어 김 총장은 ‘동원그룹 김재철 회장이 부경대 동문이라서 자랑스럽다. 어떤 분인가?’라는 학생 질문에 많은 시간을 할애했다.

김 총장은 “김재철 동문은 1969년 동원산업을 설립해 오늘날 매출 15조 원대의 20대 그룹으로 성장시킨 장본인.”이라면서, 김재철 동문의 성공비결을 ‘독서’로 꼽았다.
 
그는 “뵐 때마다 김재철 회장님은 정말 책을 많이 읽으시는 분이라는 점을 느낀다.”면서, “어려운 시절에 대학을 졸업하고 지금의 성공이 있기까지 열정도 도전도 있었지만 그 성공의 뿌리는 독서에 있었다.”고 말했다. 김 회장은 젊은 시절 원양어선을 탔을 때도 항상 책을 옆에 끼고 있었다고 한다.

부경대 동문, 한국에서 처음으로 남극 대륙 밟다

김 총장은 ‘한국에서 최초로 남극 대륙을 밟은 우리 대학 이병돈 동문은 어떤 분이신가요?’라는 학생의 물음에 “우리나라 바다 연구의 첫길을 연 자랑스러운 동문이 이병돈 동문.”이라고 답했다.

김 총장은 “1963년 이병돈 동문께서 남극을 처음으로 다녀오시면서 남극의 중요성이 정부나 국민들에게 알려졌다. 우리는 남극기지를 가지고 있다. 남극기지를 가진 나라는 몇 나라 안 된다. 이병돈 동문이 그 길을 열었다. 우리의 자랑스러운 동문이시고 우리나라 바다 연구를 시작하신 분이다. 남이 가지 않은 길을 미리 크게 생각하고 큰 걸음을 내디딘 분.”이라고 말했다.

90년 넘은 학과, 최초·유일 학과 ’수두룩’

한 학생이 우리 대학에 90년이 넘은 학과들이 수두룩할 정도로 전통 깊은 학과들이 많은 이유를 묻자 김 총장은 “부경대 전신인 부산수산대와 부산공업대의 역사가 오래되다 보니 ‘유일’ ‘최초’ 학과가 많다.”면서, 관련 학과들을 소개했다.

김 총장은 “‘최초’ ‘유일’ 학과가 많으니까 그 당시 우수 인재들이 그 학과에서 공부하고 지금 사회에서 크게 활약 중”이라면서, “부산 건축사협회 가면 70%가 부경대 출신이다. 부산지역 동문 기업수도 6천개에 이를 정도.”라고 소개했다.

세계의 대통령들, 부경대 동문이 되다

김 총장은 ‘외국 대통령들이 우리 부경대에서 명예박사학위를 많이 받은 이유’에 대해서는 “명박을 받으신 대통령들이 바누아투 팔라우 키리바시 같은 작은 섬나라이지만 풍부한 수산자원의 많은 넓은 해역을 가지고 있고, 유엔에서 한 표를 행사하고 있는 중요한 국가들.”이라면서, “자국의 청년들이 해양이나 수산 기술을 배우고 교류하기 위해 우리 대학에서 명예박사를 받고 싶어 한다.”고 소개했다.

김 총장은 “이처럼 우리가 우리를 아는 것보다 밖에서 우리를 더 잘 안다. 이는 좋은 일이다.”면서, “또 앞으로 유엔 세계수산대학이 우리 대학에 설립되면 우리 대학의 글로벌 위상이 더욱 높아질 것.”이라고 밝혔다.

총장님의 애정 어린 잔소리(?)는?
 
김 총장은 학생들에게 “대학생 때는 해보고 싶은 것을 두려워하지 말고 해보아야한다. 버킷리스트를 적어서 작은 거라도 하나씩 도전해 보아야한다. 대학생 때 실패해도 누가 뭐라고 나무라지 않는다. 사회에 나가서는 그렇게 할 수 없다.”고 말했다.

김 총장은 “나는 누구인가, 나는 어떻게 살 것인가, 나는 이 일을 왜 하는가, 이런 질문을 자신에게 습관적으로 해야 한다.”면서, “큰 꿈을 꾸고 자기 삶에 질문하는 부경대생이 되길 바란다.”고 강조했다. <부경투데이>
